New Executive Director Ready to Lead

I am delighted to serve as your new UTSA Alumni Association Executive Director. My first few months have been a whirlwind, with road trips to see alumni across the state, events here in San Antonio and many meetings with truly wonderful alumni. I’ve been heartened to meet so many people who care about UTSA and the Alumni Association.

It is an honor to be able to lead this great association and I appreciate your welcome.  Thank you and, of course, Birds Up!

Tailgate Moves To ITC

The UTSA Alumni Association will kick off the 2018 football season in a new tailgating area at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. The first tailgate of the season will be celebrated before the UTSA Football game against Baylor on Saturday, Sept. 8. The tailgate will begin at 3 p.m.

With convenient access and just a short walking distance to the stadium, this year’s new hub will offer all the same spirit-filled festivities – food, meeting new and old friends, football, and rallying for the Roadrunners!

Steve Woodall, Senior Director of Alumni Programs, is excited to introduce UTSA alumni to their new tailgating home. “It’s a great opportunity for us to partner with the UTSA Hemisfair Campus to have our tailgate party at the ITC,” Woodall said. “The venue may have changed, but we’re still going to get Rowdy!”

Tailgate admission is free to all UTSA Alumni Association members.  Non-member adult admission is $25 and children 16 and under are free.  Anyone who wants to get Rowdy is welcome!

2018 Alumni Gala

The UTSA Alumni Gala was a night to remember as nearly 750 attendees packed the premier alumni event to honor three individuals with awards and to raise funds for scholarships and programming on Aug. 11 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort.

Recognized at the event were Alumnus of the Year Randy Vogel ’79, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Linda Montgomery ’87 and Distinguished Service Award recipient entrepreneur David Spencer.

“Each of our honorees made significant contributions to UTSA and our community,” said university president Dr. Taylor Eighmy. “Randy, Linda, David, I thank you for everything you do for UTSA.”

This year’s gala featured for the first time an online silent auction that raised funds for UTSA Alumni Association programs and scholarships for students. “The UTSA Alumni Association and scholarship program has made a significant difference for our students and their success,” Eighmy said.

The 2018 Alumni Gala premier sponsor was Muy! Pizza Huts and Wendy’s.  After Party sponsors were Yvonne ’85 and Gary Fernandez ’86 and Tami ’94 and Steve Griffin ’92, ’93.

Your Donor Impact

Because of alumni and friends like you, students like Tuoyo Eresanara are afforded opportunities to fulfill their dreams of attaining a university education every year.

A native from Nigeria, Tuoyo is a 2017-2018 Alumni Association scholarship beneficiary.

Currently majoring in in biology with a concentration in neurobiology, he says receiving scholarship support has given him a feeling of belonging to the university. Scholarship support has also given him the freedom to get involved on campus. He has joined the Pre-Med Society, UTSA Ambassadors, and is a member of the Honors College.

“You’re part of a group of people that makes you feel like they’re looking out for you,” he said. “It says a lot about them and how UTSA treats everyone like family.”

And given the opportunity to thank a donor for their financial gifts, Tuoyo mentioned he would express his heartfelt gratefulness. “They are heroes,” he said. “When I see what the donors do in providing money for scholarships, I want to be like them one day. I know I can’t pay the donors back directly for what they do; but I can pay it forward for future students when I’m in position to do so.”

The UTSA Alumni RGV Chapter will host a UTSA Football Watch Party, Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Whistling Duck on 1603 E. Griffin Parkway in Mission, Texas.
